Phycocyanin in Candlewood Lake
Lake phycocyanin levels after period of rain (above) and after dry period (below):
Phycocyanins are found in Cyanobacteria (previously called blue-green algae).
Notice: Each pixel is 30 square meters (roughly 100ft x 100ft).
Above:
- Candlewood Lake as sparse phycocyanin levels in the main body after a large rain event.
- Phycocyanin levels are low at the borders and higher in the center of Candlewood Lake.
- Phycocyanin levels are low for the Housatonic River feeding Lake Lillinonah following a high flow wet period.
Below:
- Candlewood Lake has elevated Phycocyanin levels after a prolonged period of no rain.
- With no storm waters in a dry period, water infiltration to Candlewood Lake is dominated by septic effluent.
- Lake Lillinonah as low levels of phycocyanin (blue-green algae) in the dry period, problably because it has stream flow, unlike Candlewood Lake that has only septic flow entering the lake.
